Ford by its luxurious interior and elegant vertical line style and polished chrome accented exterior. This mid size SUV features all wheel drive capability and seating for up to 7 passengers. Due to their gas guzzling nature, larger SUV’s have lost potential owners to more fuel efficient vehicles, but for those who have the need for a great deal of passenger and cargo space combined with all wheel drive and towing capabilities, the Mountaineer is very nicely equipped and priced right. Changes for the 2008 model year include taking a few of the features that were previously included on the standard equipment list and moving them over to the list of options. A few new optional features are now available, including 20 inch wheels and the ‘Mercury Sync’ system which was designed in conjunction with Microsoft and enables centralized operation of iPods, cell phones, and other electronic devices either by voice or manually.

The Mountaineer is available in base and Premier trim levels and both come standard with rear wheel drive, while all wheel drive is optional. The Base model has two rows of seats and accommodates 5 passengers. A long list of standard equipment includes 17-inch wheels, a six-way power driver seat, cruise control, full power accessories, a leather-wrapped tilt steering wheel with audio controls and a CD player stereo with auxiliary audio jack. Options include is a 3rd Row Seat Package that bundles a 50/50-split fold flat rear bench seat and auxiliary climate control. A Comfort Options Package is also available and will add heated leather seats, dual zone climate control and power adjustable front seats.

The Premier trim comes standard with the third-row seat and most of the equipment from the Comfort Package. Options for this model include a Third-Row Seat Elite Package that allows for power operated folding of the 3rd row seat. Many a la carte options are also available and include upgraded premium sound systems; power operated running boards, a towing package, a navigation system, a rear seat DVD entertainment system and rear park assist.

Power is provided by either the standard 4.0 liter V6 engine or the optional 4.6 liter V8, which is only available for the Premier trim. The V6 is mated to a 5 speed automatic transmission and delivers 210 horsepower. The V8 comes with a 6 speed automatic and produces 292 horsepower. Both engines can be outfitted with either rear wheel drive or all wheel drive and the maximum towing capacity is 7220 pounds. The Mountaineer received EPA estimates of 13 mpg in the city and 19 mpg on the highway, regardless of drivetrain configuration. The 0 to 60 speed is respectable at 8.3 seconds.

The 2008 Mercury Mountaineer will appeal to consumers who need ample passenger space and a reliable vehicle with towing capabilities but want a smooth riding, agile handling, plush, well equipped cabin. With below average fuel economy and a resale value that is expected to be poor, the purchase of a Mountaineer should be based on the need for its practical functionality, with the upscale look and feel being a really nice bonus.

It competes domestically with the likes of Chevrolet TrailBlazer, GMC Acadia, Dodge Journey, Saturn Outlook and Jeep Grand Cherokee. Challenger imports include Hyundai Veracruz, Nissan Murano, Toyota 4Runner, Pilot and Highlander, Mazda CX-9, Nissan Pathfinder, Kia Sorento and Mitsubishi Endeavor.

The last time there was any significant change in body style was in the 2006 model year. Only minor changes this year, but one nice touch is the new trailer sway control. While the Mountaineer doesn’t particularly stand out, it is a sharp looking vehicle inside and out. It is considered underpowered, though, and the warranty is far from best in class.

The Mountaineer comes in two trims: Base and Premier. Either comes in rear-wheel or all-wheel drive. With the right package, towing capacity can reach almost seven thousand pounds, closing in on double the class average. Cargo space is also nice, at better than 50 percent above class average.

The Mountaineer has two engines available. The Base model gets a 210 horsepower 4.0 liter V6. Premier can get the same engine or a 292 horsepower 4.6 liter V8. The six-cylinder engine is matched with a five-speed automatic transmission and the eight-cylinder is matched with a six-speed automatic, both with overdrive. Best fuel economy is with the rear-wheel drive eight-cylinder engine, which gets 15 miles per gallon in the city and 21 miles per gallon on the highway. Overall, fuel efficiency could be improved.

Mountaineer also does well on safety with five-star front and side impact ratings from NHTSA, slightly above class average. The three-star rollover rating is a rather low average for these vehicles. Mountaineer has child safety locks, tire pressure monitor, anti-theft system, antilock brakes with electronic brake assist, traction control, stability control and airbags everywhere - all standard. You can also get an electronic parking aid.

The Base model comes standard with automatic headlights, a full size spare tire, heated power exterior mirror, rear window defogger, leather covered tilt steering wheel, trip computer, power front seats, second row removable seats, power windows and door locks and tow hitch receiver. Available either as options or trim upgrades you can get a running board, adjustable foot pedals, six-CD changer with premium sound system, navigation system, DVD player, heated front seats with memory and power lumbar support, removable third row seat and sunroof.

Base price on the 2009 Mercury Mountaineer is an easy on the pocketbook $27,225, certainly among the best prices in class for what you get. With that in mind, Mountaineer’s “problems” just don’t seem large enough to keep it from getting a good look from anyone wanting a midsize SUV.

The Mountaineer made a fairly successful entry into the mid size SUV marketplace and continued to receive important updates between 1997 and 2002 that included stability and handling enhancements and a 4.0 liter V6 engine that improved performance. However, an increasingly large amount of roll over accidents came to a head in 2000 as a heated controversy and subsequent court case between Firestone Tires and Ford Motor Company ensued. With no one wanting to be responsible for the horrendous accidents, Ford argued that Firestone tires that were part of the standard equipment for both Explorers and the Mountaineer were faulty, while Firestone insisted that the vehicles themselves were not properly designed. Although the court case was settled with the increased amount of roll over accidents being attributed to drivers reacting in an extreme manner to tire blow outs, both the Explorer and Mountaineer received a totally new design in 2002 in hopes of addressing any consumer safety fears.

The 2002 model arrived with an all new independent suspension that was based upon the same concept as many luxury sedans, yet was still fun to drive and provided more ground clearance and capable off road handling. Additional air bags that included side curtain airbags that would deploy during roll overs were one of the safety features new for 2002. The overall dimensions were now 1.9 inches wider, allowing for more leg and shoulder room for driver and passengers. An optional third row, fold-flat seat and larger cabin provided greater comfort and more flexibility.

In 2006, the Mountaineer received an overhaul that included many important improvements. In addition to a sportier style highlighted by a more pronounced grille treatment and new tail lights, the interior was freshened and upgraded with more insulation to provide a quieter ride and a revised frame and shocks to provide a smoother ride. A new t4.6, V8 powerhouse engine produced an impressive 292 horsepower while increasing gas mileage. The handling was enhanced with AdvanceTrac Stability control and Roll Stability control and both features were part of the standard equipment package. New options included a power operated third row seat and a navigation system.

This mid size SUV was popular with those who need more than a small, compact SUV can offer, and less than a full size SUV’s hauling capabilities and lack of fuel efficiency. The 2007 Mercury Mountaineer offers practicality in an extremely attractive package. For occasional off road driving and hauling and a reliable, comfortable vehicle for every day use, the Mountaineer fits the bill nicely. With six trims from which to choose that include all wheel drive versions, and a handful of upgrades including an audio input jack, heated windshield and larger entertainment system screen, the sharp looking 2007 Mercury Mountaineer is worthy of consideration by anyone seeking the utility of a mid size SUV with comfort and convenience features often associated with more luxurious and more expensive models.

The base model comes with a 2.3 liter, 160 horsepower, four cylinder engine and a five-speed transmission in your choice of manual or automatic. The higher-level engine is a 3.0 liter, 221 horsepower V-6, and has only one transmission option: a six speed automatic. Neither engine requires premium gasoline.

Cosmetically, the designers of the Milan say, they drew inspiration from modern cities, and the distinctive elements include a waterfall grille and a satin-aluminum finish on the trim. The headlights are wide, and wrapped into the hood, and the tail lights are LEDs. For 2008, in addition to a keypad for keyless entry, the Milan also comes in five new colors, including white, silver, blue, and two different shades of green.

Inside the 2008 Mercury Milan, the design cues are reminiscent of expensive handbags and trendy home appliances. There’s seating for five covered in leather upholstery with a chose of metallic or wood trim, with two-toned upholstery available as an option. Later 2008-model Milans will incorporate a mood-lighting system, spotlighting the front cup holders, and both the front and back foot wells with a variety of colors, including blue, green, red, and yellow. Taller passengers will appreciate the easier access to the back seat, provided by back doors that have been extended further toward the tail of the car, and there’s a spring-assist for folding the back seat down (it’s got a 60/40 split, for greater flexibility). Long items can be transported more easily by using a pass-through from the trunk into the passenger seating area, and the front passenger seat folds flat, if needed.

Comfort features of the 2008 Milan include a power-adjusted driver’s seat, AM/FM radio and CD player with an input jack for mp3 players, and power door locks and windows. The Sync system is an optional feature, and includes hands-free cellular access as well as a DVD-based navigational system.

The 2008 Mercury Milan comes standard with side-impact and side-curtain airbags, as well as a disc-based anti-lock braking system and traction control. Fuel economy estimates for the Milan are not yet available.

This four-door model comes equipped with a great number of standard features and has several optional packages available as well. With two engine and transmission choices, the Milan is customizable for each buyer’s needs. Not only that, the 2009 Milan is affordable for even the most wallet-conscious consumer.

Under the hood, the 2009 Milan is equipped with a 160 horsepower 2.3L I4. Buyers can upgrade to a generous 221 horsepower 3.0L V6 as well. A five-speed manual transmission is standard, but buyers can opt for a five-speed automatic or six-speed automatic if desired. The Milan includes front-wheel drive, power rack and pinion steering, and an optional traction control system. Most family sedans for the 2009 model year include traction control as a standard feature, so the Milan could easily be overlooked by some buyers. Also, 20 city MPG and 29 highway MPG is not quite up to par with many other comparable models.

Inside, the 2009 Mercury Milan includes an MP3 audio input jack, a trial subscription to SIRIUS Satellite Radio, and an ample amount of storage. Families will be pleased with the instrument panel storage bin, overhead storage console, and the wealth of cupholders throughout. Also, grocery bag hooks are implemented in the Milan’s trunk, so bags will not spill over while driving. Four-way front passenger seats and a driver’s seat with lumbar support are included as well.

Six varying upgrade packages are available like the Wales Mahogany Wood Appearance Package that adds elegant wood accents throughout the interior. The VOGA package features luxurious additions like cashmere door trim inserts and 17-inch chrome clad wheels. Also, the Appearance Package gives the 2009 Milan a sportier feel with a rear spoiler, 17-inch wheels, and a leather-wrapped steering wheel.

Base priced at $19,885, the 2009 Mercury Milan is reasonably priced and is an impressive intro sedan model for families. However, the younger consumer might opt for a more modern and powerful model like the Chrysler Sebring. With ten different exterior color choices, buyers will be pleased with the personal touch that they can put on the Milan, but most colors are muted and neutral, so some consumers might find the sedan to be bland. Nevertheless, those that are looking for an understated model will find the Milan to be a great match.

Mercury Milan

The Mercury Milan was introduced in 2006 as the mid size sedan replacement for the Mercury Sable. Although it is almost identical to the Ford Fusion, it does have a more refined and well appointed interior and more standard equipment than the Fusion. The luxury and sport inspired base model 2006 Milan included some upscale features such as keyless entry, six way power driver seat, premium stereo with six speakers and MP3 capability, cruise control, split folding rear seat and full power accessories. The Premier models were equipped with 17 inch aluminum wheels and leather seating with options packages that included heated seats and automatic climate control. With a touch of sporty styling and an affordable price, this sedan premiered as one of the more luxurious in its class and enjoyed steady sales.

For the 2007 model year the Milan i4 and the Milan V6 both come standard with a power driver’s seat, air conditioning, full power accessories, automatic climate control, and a tire pressure monitoring system. This mid size sedan is powered by either a fuel efficient 2.3 liter inline 4 cylinder engine or a more robust 3.0 liter V6. Additional standard features include a fold down front passenger seat, anti lock brakes and front mounted and side curtain airbags. The V6 models are now available with traction control standard and Premier models now include satellite radio and a DVD based navigational system. Additionally, the V6 can now be equipped with optional all wheel drive. The new sporty appearance options package for the base model includes a leather wrapped steering wheel, suede seat inserts, a rear spoiler, 17 inch wheels and an attractive ice blue accented interior color combination.

The Mercury Milan handles exceptionally well, looks sleek and the cabin is relatively quiet and void of most road and wind noise. The combination of performance, style and value have helped Milan to continue to successfully compete in the mid size sedan category.
